15 Tips for Life in Dubai and Abu Dhabi After Nearly a Decade in the UAE

Living in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates for nearly a decade has transformed me in many ways. This city — and the country as a whole — is a place that challenges you, elevates you, and sometimes even makes you doubt yourself. It teaches you, humbles you, and at the same time, makes you feel proud. Over time, I’ve learned that every experience has its purpose. Today, I want to share a series of tips that I consider essential for those who already live here or are about to begin this adventure in the UAE.

1. Keep an Open Mind and Stay Curious

One of the keys to surviving (and thriving) in Dubai is to constantly be open to exploring new opportunities. Everything changes fast here — technology, industries, trends, restaurants, streets… and job opportunities pop up where you least expect them. That’s why keeping an open attitude and being willing to learn something new is essential.

Never underestimate the power of a short course, a certification, or even a casual conversation that sparks your interest in something new. In this city, those who adapt and learn quickly are always one step ahead.

2. Strengthen Your Tolerance and Cultural Openness

Dubai is a true global crossroads. People from over 200 nationalities live here, with different customs, languages, religions, and worldviews. At first, it can be overwhelming. But over time, you learn to be more tolerant, to let go of prejudice, and to listen with respect.

Developing this ability is key to success both at work and in daily life. Being kind, empathetic, and a good listener will open doors and help you build meaningful relationships with people from all corners of the world. Don’t miss the chance to grow your social and professional network.

3. Don’t Give Up Easily: Dubai Can Be Tough, But It Rewards

Dubai may seem like a city of luxury and convenience, but it’s also a demanding environment. Workdays can be long, processes complicated and unfamiliar, and with the influx of migrants, competition is fiercer than ever. There are days when you might wonder if all the sacrifice is worth it.

The answer is yes. If you’re determined and keep going when others quit, Dubai will reward you. It’s common to see people go from sharing rooms with strangers to leading companies, buying property, and achieving dreams that once seemed impossible. The key is perseverance.

4. Don’t Neglect Friends and Family Back Home

One of the most common mistakes is becoming so focused on building a new life in Dubai that you forget to maintain ties with your home country. Over time, this can lead to emotional emptiness and loneliness.

Stay connected with your loved ones. Call, text, visit when you can. The balance between what you build in Dubai and what you preserve from your roots is key to emotional well-being.

5. Find a Balance Between Enjoying Life and Planning Ahead

Dubai invites you to enjoy life — amazing restaurants, luxury cars, parties, weekend trips to dream destinations… It’s all tempting. But it’s also easy to lose control and forget that all of this comes at a cost.

Enjoying life is great, but it’s also essential to think about the future. Are you saving money? Do you have a plan in case you lose your job? Are you investing? The key is to find a balance: enjoy the present with vision and responsibility.

6. Don’t Fall into the Trap of Just Partying and Traveling

At first, many fall into the trap of “living the life” in Dubai. Every weekend seems to offer a new party, a new brunch, a new escape. But if that’s all you do, time will fly by and you’ll realize you’ve built nothing solid.

Have fun, yes — but with limits. Set routines, goals, and priorities. Don’t forget why you came to Dubai in the first place.

7. Think Long Term, Wherever You Are

Dubai might be a chapter in your life or a permanent base. Whatever your decision, it’s important to have a long-term vision. Do you see yourself here in 10 or 20 years? Do you want to return to your home country or move elsewhere?

Clarity helps you make better decisions: whether to invest here or back home, whether to train in certain fields, learn a new language, or build a professional network locally or internationally. Don’t live only in “short-term mode.”

8. Save and Invest: The Future Starts Today

A golden rule many learn too late in Dubai: always save part of your salary. No matter how high your income is, if you don’t have financial discipline, it’ll slip through your fingers.

Open a savings account, research investment options (local or international), and set financial goals: an emergency fund, property, your own business, or a comfortable retirement. Dubai can be the perfect place to build capital — but you decide how to use it.

9. Explore the Other Emirates and Neighboring Countries

Many people get caught in Dubai’s fast-paced lifestyle and forget there’s a whole country to discover. Abu Dhabi, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman… Each emirate has its own charm, culture, and opportunities.

You also have fascinating nearby countries like Oman, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Georgia, Armenia, Egypt, India, Sri Lanka, or the Maldives. Take advantage of Dubai’s strategic location to travel and enrich yourself personally and culturally.

10. Don’t Underestimate the Potential of Abu Dhabi and Other Emirates

Even though Dubai gets the most attention, it’s not the only place full of opportunities. Abu Dhabi, for example, offers an excellent quality of life, high salaries, and a more relaxed pace. Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah are investing heavily in tourism and economic development.

Many entrepreneurs and professionals have found more favorable business environments in these emirates, with less competition and lower costs. Don’t limit yourself to Dubai — open the map and explore.

11. Sharing is Part of the Journey

Sharing an apartment, a room, a car, or even common expenses is not a sign of failure — it’s a smart financial strategy, especially in the early years. In Dubai, where the cost of living can be high, this is a healthy way to stay stable and save.

Over time, you’ll improve your lifestyle, but in the meantime, sharing can help you control your finances — and even make new friends.

12. Dream Big and Stay Motivated

Don’t settle. If you’re in Dubai, you’re in a city where the only limits are the ones you set. Set clear goals for yourself: your first car, your first apartment, a better job, starting your own business.

Be ambitious — but also consistent. Update your CV, network, learn new skills, look for better opportunities, don’t be afraid to change jobs. Career mobility is common in Dubai and a powerful way to grow professionally.

13. Connect with Local Communities

Many expats live in isolation within their own social circles. But connecting with local communities — both Emiratis and other nationalities — is an excellent way to integrate better, understand the cultural context, and open new personal and professional doors.

Attend events, join cultural groups, collaborate with NGOs, talk to your neighbors. Dubai’s true wealth lies in its diversity, and being an active part of that human network is a valuable experience.

14. Don’t Neglect Your Health: Exercise and Vitamin D During Summer

It’s common to hear stories of people feeling discouraged, low on energy, or lacking motivation to move during the summer. That’s mostly due to the intense heat and sun — most people avoid going outside and miss their daily dose of natural Vitamin D.

That’s why it’s important to have your supplements ready to give you that energy boost, paired with a good workout routine or gym sessions.

15. Don’t Rely on Stereotypes – Discover Your Own Version of the UAE

It’s easy to form expectations about Dubai and the Emirates based on online content. Whether it’s overly positive or negative, this city and country have fans all over the world — as well as their fair share of critics trying to discourage or criticize the city.

Make sure that throughout your experience in Dubai, you are the one who discovers and defines your own version of this dream-filled desert.

After nearly 10 years in Dubai and the UAE, I can say this place changes lives. It’s not easy, but it’s deeply transformative. Here, I’ve learned to dream bigger, work harder, and value my family, my culture, and my mental health more.

Dubai is not just luxury and extravagance. It’s also a place where thousands of people fight every day for a better future. If you know how to adapt, keep your feet on the ground and your eyes on the horizon, this city can help you build the life you always dreamed of.

Remember: stay open, humble, strong in spirit, and grateful in heart. Life in Dubai isn’t for everyone, but if you learn to live it with intelligence, purpose, and balance, it can be one of the best chapters of your life.
